Clean Ocean Action Program for grades K-5

Clean Ocean Action Program for grades K-5 In-Person

Clean Ocean Action's  “Be the Sea Change” educational presentation uses Joel Harper’s book Sea Change as the narrative to explore the topic of environmental stewardship through the eyes of a young child as she visits her beach, cleans the debris, and rallies her classmates to join her in keeping their beautiful beach clean.

As coastal community residents, we are affected by the ocean and must be made aware of the dangers of marine debris and the consequences of an ocean filled with plastics. Sea Change explores the problem and its kid friendly solutions for an audience K-5 beachgoers who will comprise the next generation of environmental stewards.  A truly unique feature of Mr. Harper's book is that it has no words so that the exploration of the artwork is up to the individual group of students and the facilitator.  Each presentation is interactive and original.

The presentation lasts approximately 30 minutes, during which the presenter uses storytelling techniques to guide the students through the themes of the books.  After reading and interacting with the guest reader, students will enjoy a coloring sheet to reinforce the themes of the story. Students will also learn about Clean Ocean Action’s local programs in which families can get more involved so that they too can “Be the Sea Change”.
